Photoshop Finally Coming to the iPad

August 2, 2018

Adobe is set to release a fully fledged version of Photoshop that can be used on an iPad, according to sources speaking to Bloomberg.

It’s great news for users. They can now expect a fully functioning version of Photoshop on their iPad which is linked to their Creative Cloud accounts. This means someone who starts editing a project on their desktop can now finish it off on the fly using their portable device.

The plans mark a dramatic shift in strategy for Adobe, which has dominated the software field for creative design professionals, but struggled to make waves in the mobile device market.

The software company is planning to unveil the new app at its annual MAX creative conference in October, sources told Bloomberg, with the app expected to be for sale from 2019.

Speaking to Bloomberg, Scott Belsky, Adobe’s chief product officer of Creative Cloud, confirmed the plans: “There’s a lot required to take a product as sophisticated and powerful as Photoshop and make that work on a modern device like the iPad. We need to bring our products into this cloud-first collaborative era.”

People familiar with the plans also told Bloomberg the project is part of a longer term strategy that will spread to Adobe’s other programs, such as Illustrator.

A new Photoshop app for the iPad will certainly hurt other mobile apps that have filled the void, such as Pixelmator, Affinity and Enlight Photofox.
